I agree with Allen in that Gmail searches are far more Dynamic than anything I've used previously with Outlook.

The gist of it is if you would normally sort emails so that you can group the emails from joe (3), ann (2) and nancy (8) you would simply type "in:inbox from:joe" and this will just show the 3 emails from Joe. Once you've been through those change the word "joe" in the search bar to "ann" and you will Ann's emails. Then do the same again for Nancy.
It sounds like a lot of work but it's more refined. If your inbox has 200 emails from 100 different users but you just want to see Ann's then I think this option is much more efficient.
Each to their own but it does take some getting used to.
